Craigie Aitchison was born in Edinburgh in 1926. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1952-54. His paintings and prints, with their distinct, subtle imagery, have been exhibited throughout the UK and internationally in many solo and group exhibitions. Major retrospectives of his work were held at the Serpentine Gallery (London) in 1981 and the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, in 1996. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1988, he lives and works in London.
