John Hoyland was born in Sheffield in 1934. He studied at the Sheffield School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. Since his first solo exhibition at the Marlborough New London Gallery in 1964, his colourful abstract paintings have been exhibited widely in international galleries and museums. Highly respected as a teacher, he has taught at Hornsey College of Art, Chelsea and St. Martin's Schools of Art, the Royal Academy Schools and the Slade School of Fine Art. Elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1991, he lives and works in London
