Mona Hatoum was born to Palestinian parents in Beirut in 1952. On a visit to London in 1975, she was prevented from returning to Lebanon by the outbreak of civil war. She graduated from Byam Shaw School of Art (1979) and the Slade School of Fine Art (1981) in London. Her work has been shown in numerous international galleries and museums including the Havana Bienale, 1994; Sydney Biennial, 2006; Venice Biennale, 1995 & 2005; Documenta11, 2002; and ‘Sensation’ at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Brooklyn Museum (1997, 2000). Her work is in many public and private collections such as the Centre Georges Pompidou; Dallas Museum of Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Tate. Lives and works in London and Berlin.
