Nja Mahdaoui was born in Tunis in 1937. He graduated from the Academy of Arts of Santa Andrea in Rome and the Department of Oriental Antiquities at the Ecole du Louvre, Paris. His work as a painter and graphic designer is imbued with the form, meanings and symbols in Arabic calligraphy, and has been shown extensively in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Pakistan, Tunisia, Cuba, eastern and western Europe and North America. He is a member of the International Jury of the UNESCO Arts Prize and has been a Jury member for the Dakar Biennial in Senegal. He lives and works in Tunisia.
